This course is aimed at those who would like to write songs. The construction of melodies and the appropriate use of harmonies, and the setting of texts will be the focus of the class. A fundamental reading knowledge of music notation is required.
Many young students are now involved with music as a major activity in their lives. A stumbling block which they frequently encounter in trying to accomplish their goals is a lack of knowledge of basic music theory. This course will cover those fundamentals necessary for increased success. Key signatures, scales, basic chordal structure and chord progressions will be included. Rhythmic exercises will be included as well. The ability to read fundamental music notation is necessary for this class which is aimed at improving one’s overall ability to organize musical ideas so that they are more understandable. Basic harmonizations of melody will be the primary goal.
